For most first-time visitors, stay in Chiang Rai city centre around the Clock Tower and Night Bazaar. It is the easiest base for restaurants, evening markets, Bus Station 1 and day-tour pickups. Choose the Kok riverside for a quieter resort stay with pools and gardens, or the White Temple countryside only when you have a car or want to build the trip around Wat Rong Khun and Singha Park.
The city is compact, but the attractions are not. That is why area choice matters: a hotel can be excellent yet still force unnecessary rides every evening.

1. City Centre / Clock Tower — best for first-time visitors
This is the default answer for most trips. Current 2026 area guides consistently place the Clock Tower centre first for travelers without a car because the Night Bazaar, restaurants, Bus Station 1, Wat Phra Kaew and local services are close together.
Le Patta is a useful reference point: its official site places the hotel about 100 metres from Saturday Walking Street and about 200 metres from the old bus station, Clock Tower and Night Bazaar. MORA Boutique Hotel offers a more upscale boutique feel while staying close to the core.
Choose the centre if you want to finish a long temple day and still be able to walk to dinner. The main trade-off is that Wat Rong Khun and Wat Rong Suea Ten are not central-city sights.
2. Night Bazaar / Bus Station 1 — best for transport-driven stays
The Night Bazaar and old bus terminal overlap with the broader centre, but this micro-area is especially useful when you arrive by bus, leave early or plan to use local transport. Hotels such as Le Patta and Diamond Park keep evening food and transport simple.
Choose this zone for one-night stays, solo travel and budget trips. It is less attractive if your main goal is a resort pool, river view or quiet garden.

3. Kok Riverside — best for resorts, couples and families
The Kok River corridor holds several of Chiang Rai’s strongest full-service hotels. Le Méridien currently offers 159 rooms and suites, large 53-square-metre starting room sizes, private balconies, spa, pool and complimentary bicycle rental. The Legend has 76 rooms and pool villas, tropical gardens, spa and a riverside infinity pool. The Riverie adds family rooms, kids facilities and a mini water park.
Choose the river when the hotel is part of the holiday. Families gain space and pools; couples gain quieter surroundings and river views. The trade-off is simple: you will usually need Grab, a hotel car or tuk-tuk for the Clock Tower and Night Bazaar.
4. Near the White Temple — best for drivers and early Wat Rong Khun visits
Wat Rong Khun sits south of central Chiang Rai. Staying nearby lets you arrive early and also positions you closer to Singha Park, but it removes the easy evening walk to the Night Bazaar.
777 Food & Bed is only about 0.21 km from the White Temple in current Trip.com data, while Doowall is around 1.3 km away and offers an outdoor pool plus free bicycle rental. This area suits photographers, repeat visitors and road trips much more than first-time travelers without transport.
Should you split the stay?
Usually not for two nights. A city-centre base and day trips are simpler. With three or four nights, one river or countryside night can make sense if you want the hotel experience itself, but changing hotels just to save a short drive to one temple often creates more friction than it removes.
Best area by traveler type
Solo traveler: Clock Tower / Night Bazaar for food, walking and transport.
Couple: city-centre boutique hotel for convenience or Kok riverside for a more relaxed resort trip.
Family: Kok riverside, especially if pools and larger rooms matter.
Photographer: city centre for flexibility, or White Temple area for a very early Wat Rong Khun visit.
Road trip: riverside or south side can be more attractive because parking and road access matter more than walking to the market.
How to choose between city and river
Ask one question: after sightseeing, do you want to walk to dinner or return to a resort? If walking, choose the centre. If pool, gardens, spa and quiet matter more, choose the river. That distinction is more useful than comparing hotel star ratings before choosing the area.

Area mistakes that create unnecessary transport
The most common mistake is booking a beautiful riverside resort while expecting to walk to the Night Bazaar every evening. The reverse mistake is choosing a central budget hotel and then spending most of the trip driving south to Wat Rong Khun and Singha Park. Build the hotel around where your evenings and mornings will happen most often, not around one attractive room photo.
Two-night decision tree
If both evenings involve the Clock Tower, food and market, stay central for both nights. If one full day is deliberately slow and resort-focused, the riverside becomes stronger. If you have a rental car and Wat Rong Khun is the first priority at opening time, the south side is defensible — but only if you accept a quiet evening. Avoid changing hotels on a two-night trip unless the second property is itself a major part of the experience.
What to verify before payment
Check the exact room occupancy, whether breakfast is included, airport or bus-terminal transfer details, parking if you are driving, and whether a river-view room actually faces the river. Also compare cancellation terms because Chiang Rai itineraries are often linked to flights, buses or road trips. A slightly more expensive refundable room can be better value when several transport pieces must line up.
