Trat Travel Guide: City, Airport, Ferries & Hotels

Trat works best as a mainland gateway with enough character to justify an overnight stay of its own. The city is the practical launch point for Koh Chang, Koh Kood and Koh Mak, but it also has a compact old-town core, night markets, local food and an easy rhythm that makes a late-arrival or pre-ferry night more useful than simply waiting for the boat. The key is choosing the correct mainland base for the island you are actually visiting.

Trat Province includes the mainland city, airport, ferry gateways and major islands; the correct mainland base depends on your onward route.

Why Trat City matters even when you are heading to an island

The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes Trat as the primary launching point for the Koh Chang island group and notes that the province contains 52 large and small islands. That often causes travelers to treat the town as a blank transit point. In practice, the city solves several real travel problems: late flights, late buses, missed same-day connections, early ferries, weather changes and the need to buy supplies before leaving the mainland.

The center is compact enough to explore without turning an overnight into a second vacation. Old wooden-house streets, small cafés, the night market and inexpensive restaurants can fill an evening comfortably. A mainland night therefore becomes part of the trip instead of dead time.

Trat City versus Koh Chang

Do not mix mainland Trat hotels with Koh Chang resorts. Koh Chang is a separate island destination with its own beach areas and hotel logic. If your trip is about the island, use the existing Koh Chang Travel Guide. This cluster is intentionally about Trat City, TDX, Laem Sok and mainland transfer decisions.

Booking platforms may show island properties under “Trat” because the islands belong to Trat Province. Always open the map. A Koh Chang beachfront resort is not a Trat City hotel, and a Trat City room is not a beach-resort substitute.

Old town and the night market

Trat's central streets reward a simple evening walk. Rimklong boutique hotel trat is one of the strongest current examples of a hotel that benefits from this location: recent Booking.com data shows a 9.9 score from more than 160 reviews, and recent guest comments repeatedly mention the night-market location and helpful host.

Trat 101 Hotel provides a different kind of value. Its own site documents transfers to Laem Sok, Ao Thammachat, Laem Ngop-area services and Trat Airport. For a traveler without a car, that can matter more than a pool or large lobby.

Which pier do you need?

This is the most important logistics question. Laem Sok is the primary mainland departure point for Koh Kood and also serves Koh Mak routes. Ao Thammachat is associated with Koh Chang car-ferry access. Laem Ngop/Krom Luang Chumphon is used for some nearby-island services. These are different places and should not be treated as one “Trat pier.”

Tell the driver the island, ferry company and exact pier on the current ticket. Ferry operators can alter departure times and sometimes operating patterns with season and weather.

Laem Sok for Koh Kood

Laem Sok lies roughly 25–30 km south of Trat town. Koh Kood Express currently publishes several daily Laem Sok–Koh Kood services and explicitly states that times may change with weather and season. Trat 101 also documents songthaew and private-car transfers from the city for passengers using several Laem Sok operators.

If you have a very early sailing or want to remove one road transfer, use Hotels Near Laem Sok Pier. If your sailing is later and you value dinner, markets and hotel choice, city center can be the better base.

Trat Airport (TDX)

Bangkok Airways identifies Trat Airport as its third public airport and places it in Khao Saming District. The airport is not in the walkable city center and is not beside Laem Sok. Airport proximity, city-center convenience and pier proximity are three different hotel intents.

Current Booking.com airport results place Sleep Soundly By The Sea about 3.3 miles from TDX, Chattong Resort Trat around 5 miles away and Lomtalay Resort Trat around 6 miles away. See Hotels Near Trat Airport when flight timing is the hard constraint.

When Trat City is the best base

City center wins for a late bus, a normal next-day ferry, a free evening, a need to buy supplies or an itinerary that may change. It also gives you more ways to solve a problem if a driver cancels, a ferry changes or weather complicates the original plan.

When a pier-side stay is better

Choose the pier area for an early departure, young children, heavy luggage, a large group or simply a strong preference for removing morning uncertainty. The trade-off is fewer restaurants and less to do in the evening. Most travelers do not need more than one pier-side night.

Weather and ferry planning

TAT notes that southwest-monsoon conditions from roughly May to October can affect sea transport, particularly less-served island routes. Popular services continue, but a timetable should not be treated as a weather guarantee. Build margin into ferry-to-flight connections.

A practical 24-hour Trat stop

Arrive, check in, confirm tomorrow's transfer, then walk the center and eat at the market. The next morning, leave with enough margin for the correct pier or TDX. This sequence is simple, but it solves the most common failure: discovering the wrong pier or an unarranged transfer after breakfast.

Two nights on the mainland

Two nights make sense if you want Ban Nam Chiao, Laem Ngop, coastal scenery or a slower local day. Keep one base unless the final night genuinely needs to be beside an early ferry. Moving hotels without a logistics gain only adds packing.

Booking mistakes to avoid

The largest mistakes are booking an island property when you intended the mainland, choosing the wrong pier, assuming TDX is beside Trat City, and building a zero-buffer sea-to-air connection. Each looks small on a map or booking screen but can create a missed connection in practice.

Booking checklist

  • Confirm mainland versus island.
  • Write down the exact pier and operator.
  • Check hotel transfer help before arrival.
  • Reconfirm ferry schedules near travel day.
  • Leave weather margin for sea-to-air connections.
  • Use flexible cancellation when transport legs depend on one another.

Frequently asked questions

Is Trat worth an overnight stay?

Yes. The compact center, market, food and transfer services make it particularly useful before or after island travel.

Which pier goes to Koh Kood?

Laem Sok is the main mainland gateway. Verify the exact operator and sailing on your current ticket.

Should I stay in Trat City or near Laem Sok?

Choose the city for food and hotel choice; choose Laem Sok when minimizing the morning transfer is the priority.

Is Trat Airport downtown?

No. TDX is in Khao Saming District, so airport-side and city-center stays serve different needs.
