Koh Phayam is best planned as three different island stays: Ao Yai for the broad west-coast beach and sunsets, Ao Khao Kwai/Buffalo Bay for quieter coves and family-friendly resort choices, and Ao Mae Mai/east coast for the pier, village access and easier arrival/departure logistics. The island is small, but the hotel location still matters because all ferries land on the east coast and most beach stays require an onward motorcycle taxi, resort pickup or rented motorbike.

Koh Phayam at a glance
Tourism Authority of Thailand describes Koh Phayam as one of Ranong Province's signature island destinations and one of Thailand's quieter Andaman islands. TAT highlights the island's white-sand beaches and cashew-growing tradition, while current transport guides confirm that all scheduled speedboats and slow ferries arrive at Koh Phayam Pier on the east coast.
That geography creates the core planning rule: the boat lands in one place, but the beach experience may be on the opposite side of the island. Ao Yai, Ao Khao Kwai and Ao Mae Mai are not interchangeable hotel locations.
Ao Yai — best for long beach, sunsets and surf
Bamboo Bungalows describes Ao Yai as a roughly 3 km crescent-shaped beach on Koh Phayam's western side and positions itself directly in the center of the beach. Phayam Lodge also sits on Ao Yai and describes the bay as a 3 km beach with gentle surf, especially attractive to beginner and intermediate surfers.
Ao Yai is the clearest choice when the beach itself is the holiday: long sunset walks, a wide shoreline, beachfront restaurants and surf-oriented stays. It is less convenient for the pier, so arrival-day transport should be planned rather than improvised.
For accommodation, see Hotels on Ao Yai Koh Phayam.
Ao Khao Kwai / Buffalo Bay — best for quieter coves and family stays
Ao Khao Kwai, commonly called Buffalo Bay, has a different feel from Ao Yai. Buffalo Bay Vacation Club operates directly on the beach and markets family bungalows, restaurant service, kayaking and other water activities. Heaven Beach Resort & Art sits at Ao Khao Kwai North and offers family categories, beach access and children's activities. Marina Resort also describes itself as directly on Ao Khao Kwai Beach with family rooms, beachfront dining and watersports.
This is a strong base for families, couples who prefer smaller coves and travelers who want a resort-led stay without the long open sweep of Ao Yai.

Ao Mae Mai and the pier — best for short stays and easy transfers
All scheduled boats from Ranong reach the island on the east side. Travelfish's August 2026 transport guide says all speedboat and slow-ferry services use Koh Phayam Pier, and onward travel is typically by motorcycle taxi unless your resort provides pickup.
The Blue Sky Resort is the clearest higher-comfort option near this arrival side. Its official site states that resort golf-cart transfer from Koh Phayam Pier takes less than five minutes and lists 30 rooms across villa categories, including lagoon and seaview options.
Best for: first or last night, families who want an easy arrival, short stays and travelers who value resort pickup. Trade-off: the east coast is not the island's classic sunset-beach experience.
Ao Kwang Peeb and quieter north-island stays
The northern side is better for travelers who actively want less development and are comfortable with more local transport. Heaven Beach's official information places Ao Kwang Peeb about 2.2 km from its Ao Khao Kwai North location, which shows how quickly the island shifts from one small beach zone to another.
This area can be rewarding for slow travel, but it is less forgiving for very short stays because meals, pier trips and beach changes may all require transport.
Getting to Koh Phayam in 2026
Current 2026 transport guides show frequent high-season speedboats from Ranong to Koh Phayam, generally taking around 30–45 minutes, plus slower ferry services around two hours. TravelFish notes that low-season departures are less frequent and bad weather can cancel services.
Do not hard-code the boat time months ahead. Confirm the operator, pier and departure close to travel, especially during Ranong's wetter months.
What happens after the ferry arrives?
The pier is only the first part of the island transfer. Phayam Lodge says its Ao Yai property is about 4 km from the island pier and recommends a motorcycle taxi or rented motorbike. The Blue Sky solves this differently by offering a short golf-cart pickup from the pier.
If you have children, large luggage or do not ride a motorbike, choose a resort with clear transfer help before choosing purely by beach photos.
One-night Koh Phayam scenario
Stay on the east side or at a resort with very easy pier pickup unless the beach is the entire reason for the overnight. With only one night, losing time to two cross-island transfers can outweigh the value of the more dramatic west coast.
Three-night Koh Phayam scenario
Three nights are enough to justify Ao Yai or Buffalo Bay. You have time for one arrival transfer, two full beach days and a relaxed final return to the pier. This is where beachfront bungalows and family villas create much more value.
Five-night or longer stay
For a longer stay, room comfort, power reliability, Wi-Fi, restaurant access, laundry and transport matter more than one perfect beach photo. A family house at Phayam Lodge, a larger bungalow at Bamboo, a serviced villa at Blue Sky or a family bungalow at Buffalo Bay can be more practical than a very basic beachfront hut.
Green-season planning
Travelfish's 2026 guidance notes fewer boats in the low season and possible weather cancellations. Buffalo Bay also publishes limited low-season services, while Phayam Lodge shows separate green-season rates. This does not mean the island is closed, but planning should be more flexible than in peak season.
Families versus couples
Families benefit from family houses, restaurant access and easier transport. Phayam Lodge publishes family houses for five or seven guests; Heaven Beach lists family seaview bungalows and larger villas; Buffalo Bay has family bungalow inventory. Couples may prioritize Ao Yai sunsets, boutique beachfront rooms or Blue Sky's lagoon villas instead.
Final island booking rule
Choose the beach first, then the resort. If you want sunset and surf, choose Ao Yai. If you want a quieter bay and family-friendly resort options, choose Ao Khao Kwai. If arrival convenience matters most, stay near Ao Mae Mai and the pier. Avoid paying for an island location you will cross away from twice every day.
You can compare current Koh Phayam accommodation and room terms.
